Walk into any high-end restaurant in 2025 and you will likely see a dedicated section of the menu that would have been unimaginable five years ago. It is the Zero Proof section. We are not talking about soda water with a lime anymore. We are talking about complex, botanical, and often expensive beverages that rival their alcoholic counterparts in every way except the ABV.
The rise of the mocktail is undeniable. But for those of us in the sober community it brings up a complicated question. Is this progress or is it just pretending?
The Functional Wave
The most exciting part of this movement is the shift from "less than" to "more than." Brands like Kin Euphorics and Ghia are not just trying to taste like gin or vodka. They are creating entirely new categories of drinks designed to make you feel something.
These are functional beverages infused with adaptogens like ashwagandha, reishi mushrooms, and L-theanine. The goal is not to numb you but to lift you up. They offer a way to wind down at the end of the day or energize yourself for a social event without the crash. For many people this is a game changer. It allows them to participate in the ritual of having a drink while actually doing something good for their bodies.
The Mimic Debate
Then there is the other side of the coin. The zero-proof spirits. Brands like Lyre's, Ritual, and Seedlip have mastered the art of mimicking the burn and flavor profile of whiskey, tequila, and gin. From a culinary perspective it is impressive. It allows bartenders to create balanced, sophisticated drinks that pair perfectly with food.
But for some in recovery this mimicry is too close for comfort. The taste and the smell and even the bottle shape can be a trigger. It can feel like pantomiming a habit that they worked hard to break. There is a valid argument that holding a glass that looks and tastes exactly like a cocktail keeps you psychologically tethered to the drinking culture you are trying to leave behind.
Finding Your Own Balance
So where does that leave us? The truth is that there is no single right answer.
For the "sober curious" or those cutting back for health reasons these drinks are a miracle. They make it easy to say no to alcohol without feeling deprived or socially awkward. They keep the glass full and the questions at bay.
For others the best path is to steer clear of anything that resembles the old days. And that is perfectly okay too.
The beauty of this moment is that we finally have the choice. We are no longer relegated to the kids menu. Whether you choose a functional mood-booster or a zero-proof negroni or just a really good sparkling water you are making a conscious decision.
The mocktail revolution is not about the drink in the glass. It is about the fact that we are finally rewriting the menu to include everyone.
